John Griffiths
John Griffiths B.Ed (Hons) M.Sc. FRSH
John has 20 years experience in the development and implementation of health promotion programmes, having worked at both Heartbeat Wales and Health Promotion Wales and is a leading international expert on tobacco control and workplace health promotion (WHP).
He was closely involved in the development of the World Health Organisation’s position paper on WHP and while on secondment at the WHO’s European Regional Office wrote a framework document which brings together the complimentary disciplines of WHP, occupational health and safety, community development and environmental management. Since then he has managed a workplace tobacco project for WHO (Euro) which resulted in the cco policies.
He was the principle author and project manager of the Workplace Health promotion accreditation scheme, ’Health at Work: the Corporate Standard’.
Currently more than 80 organisations, with a combined workforce of more than 350 000, have either recently achieved or are working towards accreditation. work2health manages the delivery of support and advice to these organisations for the Welsh assembly government.
John has been closely involved in the development of the EU European Network for Workplace Health Promotion and the subsequent development of two pan-European projects on developing WHP best practice covering large companies and SMEs, and latterly has been rapporteur and facilitator for the newly emerging Enterprise for Health Network. He is particularly interested in how organisations take up health promotion initiatives, and especially on how they involve and communicate with their employees.
John has chaired the UK No Smoking Day Committee and has been instrumental in the establishment of a number of youth smoking prevention campaigns. He was also responsible for setting up community based smoking cessation services in Wales and has managed several media-led Quit and Win initiatives which consistently achieved successful quit rates of around 30%. John is a member of the Council of ASH in Wales and remains committed to tobacco control in Wales, the UK and internationally
He has just completed the development of a guidance document commissioned by ASH Scotland and the Scottish Executive for local authoritities, NHS organisations and care agencies on preparing for the implementation of the Smoke Free Law in March 2006.
He has been involved in the development of TV documentary programmes on tobacco and alcohol for both the BBC and ITV and is an experienced radio and TV broadcaster.
An experienced trainer, John has created and delivered a variety of courses in several European countries. A guest lecturer at several universities, he is also regular keynote speaker at meetings and conferences.
